LG: Artificial intelligence will run more homes in 2018

LG: Artificial intelligence will run more homes in 2018

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has long been a hotly debated topic, with some pundits claiming that it poses a grave threat to humanity while others believe that AI systems can help humans improve productivity and conditions around them. For technology company LG Electronics (LG), AI is being harnessed to achieve the latter.

The recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2018 in Las Vegas saw a smorgasbord of personal computing wearables, smartphones and home appliances. And LG, through its Open Partnership, Open Platform and Open Connectivity strategy, is an emerging leader in this exciting field.

The brand also showcased a diverse lineup of smart products that shows the world that LG is working to move technology forward while improving daily life for consumers worldwide in 2018 and beyond.

LG’s extensive portfolio of smart appliances comes with Google assistant capabilities. As of this writing, there are nearly 90 LG smart appliances that seek to deliver a simple yet future-ready connected smart home experience.

Some of the price competitive Wi-Fi connected home appliances in LG’s roster include: washing machines and dryers, refrigerators, ovens, dishwashers, vacuums and air purifiers, among others. With these appliances in the home, domestic life becomes an interactive and intuitive experience.

The beauty of the smart home lies in the hands-free operation of these appliances with the help of Google Assistant. Homeowners can now use simple voice commands on their phones to check the time remaining during wash cycles, for example, or turn off their range after cooking.

Running a household with this technology is made simpler and more convenient for the on-the-go lifestyles of today. Setup is user-friendly and convenient with the free LG SmartThinQ app, which allows users to control the entire lineup of LG smart appliances.

While not all smart appliances will be available yet in the Philippines, there are those that already made its way to a number of Filipino homes, such as the LG InstaView Door-in-DoorTM (DID).

This smart refrigerator model allows users easy access to favorite food items by simply knocking on the mirrored glass panel twice. This innovation reduces cold air loss by up to 41%, making food stored in the refrigerator stay fresh longer.

LG InstaView DID is also equipped with LG SmartThinQ. This allows users to set the refrigerator temperature, control HygieneFRESH+ and diagnose the refrigerator with a simple tap on the user’s smartphone.

But with further AI developments in the horizon, LG’s smart home appliances will be better equipped to predict the user’s needs. Its adaptive technology interprets usage habits and data to the point that LG smart appliances will know when to alert owners to order filter refills for the refrigerator or air purifier, as well as troubleshoot lint build-up in the dryer.

With these innovations, the future of artificial intelligence and smart homes indeed looks bright.

LG V30+ Showing the stories of Marawi

LG V30+ Showing the stories of Marawi

As the violence settles down in Marawi, its denizens’ stories of struggle and personal tragedy are finally starting to come to light.

To authentically capture these stories, CNN Philippines, in partnership with Havas Media Ortega, traveled to ground zero of the conflict, where they were given an unprecedented 45 minutes to explore the war-torn region and get a firsthand glimpse at what happened to the once-bustling city center.

They were accompanied by Moro millennials from MARADECA, a local non-profit that had been sheltering refugees from the city. LG Electronics loaned out two units of its flagship smartphone, the V30+, given to the respondents so that they could capture a unique perspective on the ground.

marawi 1

26-year-old Norliah Deron became a social media figure when she posted a collage of Marawi on her Facebook wall with the question, “Why were they killed?” Her post went viral; within an hour she got over a thousand friend requests. (Photos were taken with the LG V30+. This is a project in collaboration between Havas Ortega Group & CNN Philippines.)

marawi 2

The area where Norliah’s house once stood was still considered a dangerous area by the military at the time of her visit to ground zero. She hadn’t seen her house since she left Marawi, and wanted to see what happened to it. She tells a story of how she used to gaze at a nearby basketball court from the third floor of her cousin’s house – she had a crush on a local boy who used to play there. Both her home and her cousin’s home, as well as the basketball court, are likely gone, but her memories remain. Today, though, she can still gaze across the beautiful lake, as she always has. (Photos were taken with the LG V30+. This is a project in collaboration between Havas Ortega Group & CNN Philippines.)

marawi 3

Norliah taught the Christians in her group how to say the Shahada, in case ISIS militants stopped them in search of non-Muslims to kill. At one point, they were questioned by a militant who asked why a girl in their group was wearing her hijab incorrectly. Norliah quickly defused the situation by speaking calmly, and teaching the scared girl how to properly wear it. (Photos were taken with the LG V30+. This is a project in collaboration between Havas Ortega Group & CNN Philippines.)

marawi 4

In the aftermath of the evacuation, a grieving Norliah was comforted by her colleagues, who said that she may have lost her valuables, but more important than anything else, she is still alive. (Photos were taken with the LG V30+. This is a project in collaboration between Havas Ortega Group & CNN Philippines.)

marawi 5

One of the motivations for Norjanah Cosain’s quick escape was the fear that her brother would be recruited by the Mautes. In her haste, Norjanah’s mother-in-law even forgot her savings on her bed, consisting of some P20,000 in cash. All the while, she was using Facebook to stay in constant communication with her husband Najer Hadji Jalel, a MARADECA project staffer, who was out of the country at the time – ironically, for a disaster preparedness workshop. (Photos were taken with the LG V30+. This is a project in collaboration between Havas Ortega Group & CNN Philippines.)

marawi 6

Since their escape, Norjanah and her family have been living in an empty lot owned by a wealthy landowner, who generously provided the land and also pays for the electricity. Norjanah reminisces about the home that she left behind, which she and her husband Najer had slowly been building up for the last two years – “ipon and patayo” as she put it. Shortly before the siege, Norjanah had even purchased a brand-new wardrobe and curtains, in preparation for Ramadan. All of these are gone now. (Photos were taken with the LG V30+. This is a project in collaboration between Havas Ortega Group & CNN Philippines.)

marawi 7

Just like Norliah Deron, Norjanah grew agitated as she crossed the bridge to Marawi, pointing across the river, saying that her house was right there; she too wanted to jump off the bridge and swim to the other side, to see what remained. She, however, already knew the fate of their home -her Facebook group had shown her the smoldering remains of her house, burned by the Mautes and bombed by the military. (Photos were taken with the LG V30+. This is a project in collaboration between Havas Ortega Group & CNN Philippines.)

While CNN provided traditional news media coverage of the site, the Moro respondents, equipped with the V30+ and its high-end camera, gave a more deeply personal look. Norliah Deron, a young woman who lost her home in the siege, captured a beautiful photo of the lake near the city, across which she used to gaze as a child.

She also took selfies of her and fellow Moros whose lives were disrupted by the war, eyes red and stained with tears but still hopeful for the future. Norjanah Cosain, a millennial mother, and schoolteacher who evacuated her home along with her five children, took photos of the shacks that serve as the temporary homes of more than 30 families.

lgv30plus-phone.pngThrough the lens of the V30+, these young women were able to not just tell, but show their story to the world, every detail captured in every shot.

Their photos bear silent testimony to not only the terrors of war but also the indefatigable human spirit, ready to pick themselves up once more even after such tragedy.

Four tips to keep safe during disasters

Four tips to keep safe during disasters

Natural disasters can neither be controlled nor predicted. But while they can leave catastrophic damages, everyone can take precautionary steps to mitigate its adverse effects. Solane, the country’s leading LPG solutions provider, reiterates its Dapat Lang advocacy campaign – emphasizing the importance of doing the right thing for the family, for others, and society as a whole – through these tips to ensure everyone’s safety during natural disasters:

Prepare an emergency kit

emergency disaster kitAn important step in preparing for unforeseen events is having an emergency kit ready for you and your family.

Basic supplies kit should include:

  • a gallon of water per person per day for the next three days,
  • three-day supply of food,
  • flashlight,
  • extra batteries,
  • first aid kit,
  • a seven-day supply of medicines,
  • multi-purpose tools,
  • cell phone with chargers,
  • family and emergency contact information,
  • copies of personal documents,
  • extra cash,
  • blankets, and
  • maps of the area.

Safety during fire

fire safetySome of the common causes of fire, especially during natural disasters like earthquake, are faulty electrical and gas lines.

If you are caught in an establishment engulfed by fire, immediately vacate the area and ask for help.

Do not hide in closets and small spaces, and remember to stay low and crawl as it is easier to breathe in a fire if you stay low.

Plan your escape routes and safe places

house floorplanIt’s important to have a sketch of your house so you know how to immediately get out when disaster strikes. Establish and record the location of your meeting area, and be sure to practice this with your family members.

Be informed

Know the hazards within your community, and ask the local authorities about the emergency plans and warning signals. Being informed will help you gather a detailed plan for your own household.

With proper preparation, you are not only alleviating fear, anxiety, and loss but you are also reducing the impact of catastrophic disasters.
