What you need to know about leukemia

What you need to know about leukemia

Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world, particularly in developing countries like the Philippines as screening procedures are considered too difficult and costly to implement. In 2020, cancer was the second leading cause of death in the country at 62,300 deaths. Leukemia, the cancer of white blood cells, is among the most common types of cancer. Smoking, overexposure to radiation or carcinogenic chemicals, and certain genetic conditions such as Down Syndrome increase the risk of developing leukemia.

AXA Philippines, one of the country’s leading insurance providers, offers important facts to know about leukemia:

Types of leukemia.

The types of leukemia are grouped according to how rapidly the disease develops (acute vs. chronic leukemia) and the type of blood cell involved (lymphocytic and myeloid leukemia).

Symptoms to watch out for.

Some of the warning signs include bleeding or bruising easily, weakness and fatigue, loss of appetite, weight loss, swollen or bleeding gums, bone or joint pain, anemia, and sweating especially at night.

How leukemia is diagnosed.

To determine if a patient has leukemia after exhibiting signs and symptoms, a health care provider may do the following procedures: blood tests, MRI and bone marrow biopsy, and imaging tests such as x-rays, ultrasound, CT scan.

How to minimize the risk of developing leukemia.

Avoiding or quitting smoking is the most significant avoidable risk factor. Aside from quitting smoking, other lifestyle adjustments that you can make include eating healthier and exercising moderately for 150 minutes every week. Also, it’s best to avoid overexposure to the sun, artificial tanning devices, x-rays, and benzene from gasoline fumes, and emissions from some factories that can cause cell damage that may lead to cancer.

Leukemia mortality can be reduced if diagnosed and treated early.

Diagnosis and treatment may come with a hefty price tag, as chemotherapy sessions alone average P120,000 per session.

To protect your health and finances, AXA Philippines offers Health Care Access, a comprehensive and affordable health care solution for hospitalization and other medical needs. Health Care Access comes with a Critical Illness Booster which provides additional cash benefit if one gets diagnosed with any of the 56 critical illness conditions including leukemia. When diagnosed, the additional cash benefit can be used for paying other medical expenses for treatment or income replacement. The policy also includes free access to 24/7 teleconsultation with a medical professional and a Longevity Health Fund that one can utilize for medical needs at age 76 onwards.

Health Care Access comes in two types: Health Care Access Prime and Health Care Access Lite.

Health Care Access Prime provides comprehensive coverage of up to P5,000,000 annually. It also offers inpatient and outpatient care, and emergency care treatment up to the Annual Benefit Limit (ABL). This also includes an Annual Physical Exam starting from seven basic tests. The Annual Physical Exam helps with early detection and prevention in case of the possible occurrence of any critical illnesses. Health Care Access Prime also offers life and accident insurance benefits of up to P500,000.

On the other hand, Health Care Access Lite caters to people with existing healthcare plans but need additional health protection. Health Care Access Lite also includes life and accident insurance up to P500,000, and it can be enhanced with outpatient care, optical care, or dental care benefit for a small additional premium.

Protect the health of your fur babies with Cebuana Lhuillier Pet Insurance

Protect the health of your fur babies with Cebuana Lhuillier Pet Insurance

Cebuana Lhuillier, one of the Philippines’ leading and largest micro-financial service providers and a champion in financial inclusivity and mobility, recently launched its new insurance product for dogs.

The Philippines has one of the highest dog populations in the world with 11.6 Million as of 2020. Furthermore, the Philippines have the highest rate of pet ownership among the Southeast Asian countries at 83%, led by dogs at 67%. In the course of the pandemic alone, Filipinos’ interest in owning pets grew 88% compared to 2019. With the continuous growth of the pet industry, a big chunk of this is limited to grooming, nutrition, and the like. With a limited option for health care, pet owners are constantly challenged financially in order to provide for the medical needs of their fur babies.

How it all began

Jean Henri Lhuillier, Cebuana Lhuillier CEO

This is the inspiration behind Cebuana Lhuillier’s Pet Insurance Basic, a microinsurance product especially made for fur babies which are expected to serve as a welcome respite for dog-owners saddled with large veterinary bills for checkups, procedures, and medical emergencies.

“Dogs have always been loyal life companions, so it’s only right that we take care of them, especially during their health emergencies. With responsible pet ownership in mind, Cebuano Lhuillier is proud to introduce a product that’s both accessible and affordable for many of our kababayans who would like to provide their pet dogs with the best care possible, regardless of breed. This highlights our company’s commitment -providing the most relevant and reasonably-priced financial products that respond according to their needs,” Cebuana Lhuillier CEO, Jean Henri Lhuiller said.

We can’t deny that dogs provide much-needed companionship, comfort, and happiness in the everyday lives of their owners. This unmistakable bond between pet and owner was further amplified by the more than two years of isolation among Pinoys, especially in the midst of the pandemic. In turn, pet owners are known to only provide the utmost love and care to these pets, whether in the form of pet food and accessories, veterinary consultation, and medicine.

What is included in the Pet Insurance Basic package?

Pet Insurance Basic provides reimbursement from any veterinary treatment or confinement in a vet hospital in the event of an accident or disease, as well as burial assistance. Pet Insurance also offers a liability coverage feature for when the insured dog causes damage outside the owner’s home. Aside from that, owners are also insured for personal accidents for up to Php 25,000.00. For as low as P1,100.00 or P3.00/day, you can get all of these insurance benefits and features for one-year coverage.

“Being a responsible pet owner is a commitment to provide for their needs and it consists of more than simply feeding and playing with them. Part of responsible pet ownership is addressing their physical, social, emotional, and mental well-being for the remainder of the pet’s life. Our pet insurance aims to cover the risks that involved in owning dogs, not just to protect them but to protect pet owners as well.” Jonathan Batangan, First Vice President and Group Head Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance Brokers, Inc. added.

Where can I purchase pet insurance for my furbaby?

The introduction of Pet Insurance Basic is a part of Cebuana Lhuillier’s push on producing innovative products that answer to the needs of the general public, especially in their protection requirements. Make sure your pets are insured by shopping Pet Insurance Basic online through Shopee and Lazada and get your pets protected, anytime and anywhere.

Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance arm strengthens Fire Prevention call

Cebuana Lhuillier Insurance arm strengthens Fire Prevention call

The damage of getting your house razed by fire is insurmountable; fires at home can break out anytime and anywhere and can damage livelihood, household appliances, and more. In 2018, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) recorded a total of 14,316 incidents of fire from January until December.

This is why every March is Fire Prevention Month in the Philippines, and BFP’s campaign for this month is safety consciousness among our people every day of the year as a positive preventive approach to a problem that can be solved by more caution, vigilance, sobriety, the exercise of common sense and respect for the law. It is a campaign that focuses on exercising vigilance at home and keeping oneself knowledgeable on the best way to protect your home and family from destruction brought about by fire.
