I had the privilege of attending the launch of the Crizal® Prevencia™ with Essilor’s new endorser, Tom Rodriguez.
Two things made me curious enough to attend – first, that Tom was going to be there, hehehe, and second, I was curious to see what the fuss was all about and what was so special about Crizal Prevencia.
From the time I was in high school I have been wearing glasses. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I’ve stopped doing so because, miraculously, my eyesight just improved to the point where I thought I didn’t need them.
While it is true that I may no longer need prescription glasses (for now) it doesn’t mean that I have no need for glasses at all, especially if those glasses are fitted with Crizal Prevencia lenses.
Just like Tom I, too was sceptical about all the things that Crizal Prevencia claims to be able to do. And even as Tom enthuses on its virtues and we even got to see the TVC I was still thinking, “this is all just hype, right?”

Crizal Prevencia protection
They told us that Crizal Prevencia lenses are:
- reflection proof
- scratch proof
- smudge proof
- dustproof
- waterproof
- glareproof
- protection from UV rays
- protection from harmful blue light emitted by gadgets and screens
Of all the things listed above the one I wanted to find out about was the last item – protection from harmful blue light emitted by gadgets and screens. Nowadays I seem to find myself looking at or in front of a screen – phone, tablet, laptop, the TV. According to Essilor and Tom these devices emit a blue light that is harmful to our eyes. How harmful is this blue light? I had no idea and I frankly, didn’t feel any harm coming to my eyes.
Crizal Prevencia is also supposed to protect our eyes from UV rays and I was thinking, “well, I have shades, those are sufficient, right?”
Here are my discoveries about Crizal Prevencia lenses.

Crizal Prevencia glasses
As soon as I received my glasses (non-prescription) I decided to try wearing them as I drove home. In my mind I was thinking, “these lenses are supposed to be glare proof, right? So let’s test how they stand up to glare.” Oftentimes I avoid driving at night because the glare from the taillights of cars in front of me and headlights from oncoming cars always gave me eyestrain and a headache.
Upon wearing these glasses I immediately noticed a difference which I tested by occasionally lifting up and putting them back on to compare. The lights didn’t hurt my eyes so much and when I got home … no headache!
The next day I tried again, this time I drove out at noon and wore the glasses instead of shades. Surprisingly, they worked better than shades!
I usually wear shades to block the glare that hits my eyes and with these glasses I was protected from glare and UV rays. In most cases the dark tint of should do the trick but these glasses had no tint so it had me thinking again, “clear lenses that are able to protect my eyes from UV rays and glare? This is just revolutionary!” Since then I’ve been using these glasses every time I drive.
And now that I am catching up with grades I use the glasses all day as I stare at my computer screen. I can now last longer and my eyes don’t tire so easily anymore. Yey!
I am awed, flabbergasted, amazed! Where has Crizal Prevencia been all my life! 😀 One thing is for sure, once I get my eyes checked and if the optometrist/opthalmologist tells me I need glasses I will definitely have my frames fitted with Crizal Prevencia.
Let’s see what Tom Rodriguez – actor, model, and latest endorser of Crizal Prevencia – has to say about it. Below is the press release for these amazing lenses.

The campaign, Create beautiful moments, actively encourages the public to have their eyes checked as Essilor believes that beautiful moments in life deserve the clearest vision.
“Protecting healthy eyes is as important as correcting vision problems,” explains Essilor general manager, Dr. Emelita Roleda.
“Through the create beautiful moments campaign, we can educate the public on the value of healthy eyesight, for everyone to realize that it need not take a missed moment to have a reason to visit your eye doctor. Everyone should have an eye check up at least once a year.”
A visit to your optometrist will reveal more just your current prescription. Your eye doctor can also determine what preventive actions you should take against permanent damage and can even provide great insights into your general well-being. Whether prescription, for outdoor activity, indoor use or part of a digital lifestyle, these lenses filter and deflect harmful UV and blue light, lowering the risk of eye fatigue and preventing long-term vision damage.

Summer is best known as the season of glare-related eyestrain, when you experience stinging of the eyes because of too much concentrated sunlight.
But did you also know that eyestrain can be caused by other factors? Indoors, your eyes can also suffer long-term damage after facing the TV, gadgets or computer monitors at less than a foot away.
While light is an essential part of daily life – helping you see, regulating your body clock, and even providing you with much-needed Vitamin D – too much of it can cause painful eye conditions, including eyelid twitches, eye pain and extreme sensitivity to bright light.
In severe cases, overexposure can permanently damage your central vision. Harmful blue light from artificial sources such as electronic devices causes retinal cell degeneration, while ultra-violet radiation from the sun contributes to the development of cataracts.
“Everyone, no matter the age or gender, should protect their eyes daily from bad effects of excessive exposure to light,” shares Dr. Emelita Roleda, Essilor Philippines general manager.
“The effects of overexposure to UV rays and harmful blue-violet light may only be visible during adulthood, when vision problems like Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) set in, so we highly advice the Filipino public to take preventive measures against them.”
Essilor, the world’s leading ophthalmic optics company, has come up with a solution that protects vision: Crizal® Prevencia multi-coated lenses, which selectively filters bad blue light and lets in essential good light needed for well-being.
“Essilor has undergone a rigid and thorough process in the creation of Crizal® Prevencia,” explains Dr. Roleda. “Its advanced light scan technology enables us to protect our eyes from irreversible eye conditions which threaten healthy vision.”
In addition to using Crizal® Prevencia lenses, she highly advices proper eye care. “Start by getting a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year,” she says. “Your eye doctor can determine the present condition of your eyes and help you take preventive or protective measures regarding possible vision problems.”
Another way to reduce the risk of eyestrain is taking frequent breaks from reading or monitor use, shares Dr. Roleda.

Lastly, she gives some sound sartorial advice when outdoors: “This summer, load your eyeglasses with Crizal® Prevencia lenses containing E-SPF 25. Then, pair your glasses with a nice hat or a sturdy umbrella.”
Indeed, eyesight is among the most important senses, but it receives less care than it deserves. By reducing strain, limiting exposure to harmful light, and making use of eyewear like Crizal® Prevencia lenses, you can protect your eyes all day long and ensure many more years of healthy vision.

I used to wear glasses when I was in high school and all the way until the early 2000s. Since then I have been lucky enough not to need them but lately, with the stress of grading papers and submissions by my students I noticed that my eyesight seems to be more blurry than I remembered. And so pretty soon I will find myself possibly on the hunt for a new pair of glasses, at the very least, reading glasses.
Oftentimes when we visit the eye doctor to get prescription glasses, we spend some time choosing the frame that suits our face shape and personal style. But do we also take time to choose the type of lens appropriate for our eye problem and lifestyle?
According to Dr. Emelita Roleda, general manager of Essilor Philippines, the world’s leading ophthalmic optics company, “wearing just any kind of glasses is not enough. It is important to choose the right lens to get the best protection”.
Dr. Roleda explains that there are two types of lenses: uncoated and multi-coated lenses. “Uncoated lenses are prone to damage and don’t provide protection against elements that threaten healthy vision. Using multi-coated lenses enhance the performance, quality and life of glasses. Invest on high quality lenses as it will really pays off in the long run, in terms of benefits to one’s eyesight.”
Meanwhile, multi-coated lenses are more advanced and tightly controlled due to computer processes. These lenses are evenly layered, can withstand high temperature and offer more improved performance.

Glasses fitted with Crizal® Prevencia’s multi-coated lenses filter out harmful blue-violet light from gadgets, LED TVs, LED lights, fluorescent lights
Essilor’s Crizal® Prevencia is a multi-coated lens made with smart technology that filters out harmful blue-violet and UV lights emitted by the sun, gadgets, LED TVs, LED lights and fluorescent lights. On top of preventing long-term vision damage, it allows good light that helps regulate sleep and mood, and boosts brain activity.
“Do consult your eye doctor because they can recommend the best lenses suitable to your needs and lifestyle,” Dr. Roleda adds.
