Laws for Training Your Best Dog by Susan Mateo

Laws for Training Your Best Dog by Susan Mateo

Susan Mateo’s Laws for Training Your Best Dog is best bought in paper form. It’s the kind of book I’d love to hold and highlight key points. It’s a very useful reference manual. If there were more pictures, this could be a coffee book.

One of the first things I noticed (and loved) is that she says dog parent instead of dog owner. It’s a small nuance for some but I agree with thinking that a dog is a part of the family. We consider our dogs fur babies.

The book is laid out pretty simply and is very easy to understand.

She starts right off the bat saying there are 4 laws that we should know and that these are what we pay dog trainers for.

If you’re looking to get your dog parenting life off to a good start or just want to have a better-trained dog, here’s a practical and useful guide. You can find this on Amazon in Kindle, Audible, paperback, and hardcover format. Prices vary depending on format but if you have Kindle Unlimited, it’s free!

Get Sauced!

Get Sauced!

I recently got to try some buffalo wings and bbq ribs from Sauced.MNL. It was really delicious. The meat was well cooked, falling off the bone. The wings were good, nicely crispy and just the right size for a bite or two. It smelled good and we had a battle on our hands to keep our 4-feet away (all our dogs were begging for a taste too!)

They mean it when they say the star is the sauce. It is so good! This coming from someone who isn’t fond of sauces (I often prefer plain and simple food). That said, I would willingly BUY A BOTTLE of the sauces we tried today.

We were able to confirm that the sauces are made by the owner of Sauced.MNL himself. Sadly, They aren’t selling the sauce alone. More incentive to order the food (which is also delicious). The best proof is in the tasting so don’t hesitate and order if you are in the covered area.

*This is not a paid advertisement but a personal opinion.

They are now serving dinners Monday to Saturday, accepting orders until 2:00 PM daily. Delivery will be between 6:00 PM & 8:00 PM

Vietnamese-Style Chicken Salad

Vietnamese-Style Chicken Salad

I am not fond of salads because most of the time, they serve it with a dressing that uses mayonnaise (which I dislike) or something similar. That said, sometimes it is nice to try something different.

This recipe for a Vietnamese-Style Chicken Salad comes from Marions’ Kitchen. She has a video of how she made the salad, as well as the detailed recipe, which is very important for people like me who are more cookbook cooks than instinctive chefs.

This was easy to make and a hit with the family. I will definitely make this again. Thank you, Marion, for the recipe.

I did make a few changes to the recipe, mainly because I have family members who don’t like spicy food. I also prefer lettuce to cabbage in my salads so I switched that out.

Here’s the adjusted recipe, if you want to replicate what I did:

Vietnamese-Style Chicken Salad

Prep Time20 minutes
Cook Time5 minutes
Course: Salad
Cuisine: Vietnamese
Keyword: healthy, salad

Ingredients

  • 2 cups shredded cooked chicken I used air-fried chicken thighs
  • 1 small carrot
  • 1/2 head finely shredded lettuce
  • 1/2 small red onion about 1/4 if big onions are all you have
  • 1/4 cup finely sliced spring onion scallions
  • 1/2 cup mint leaves
  • 1/4 cup roasted peanuts

Dressing

  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 2 tbsp white vinegar I used white rice wine vinegar
  • 2 tbsp fish sauce

Crispy lumpia noodles

  • 6 pcs lumpia wrapper cut into strips

Instructions

  • For the dressing, mix all the ingredients together. Set aside until ready to serve.
  • To make the crispy wonton noodles, heat a small saucepan of oil over high heat. When the oil is hot, add the noodles and cook for a minute or until golden and crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel. The noodles will crisp up even more as they cool.
  • Place the chicken, carrot, lettuce, onion, spring onion, and mint, in a large bowl.
  • Chop up the peanuts. I used a chopper but you can use a mortar and pestle too. Just make sure you don't chop too fine. Add these to the bowl with the chicken also.
  • Pour the dressing and mix until well combined. Pile onto a serving plate. Use your fingers to crush the crispy wonton noodles over the top. Serve immediately.

Changes from the original recipe:

The original recipe used cabbage. The lettuce worked better for me because I like my cabbage cooked.
She also included some chilies and shallots. These felt more optional to me but do try it the way she recommended.

Ready-To-Eat Frozen Korean Corndogs

Ready-To-Eat Frozen Korean Corndogs

Just after I made some Korean Corn Dogs at home, my family spotted some frozen Korean corndogs at Waltermart. At less than 300 pesos for 10 pieces, this is pretty cheap and very convenient.

Taste

It tasted okay. It’s an instant thing so nothing earth-shattering. As with all corn dogs, you can add your favorite condiments to suit your taste. A quick snack, and one that everyone in the family enjoyed.

The pack we got was for the basic corndog. They may have other varieties and we will try them all (when we find them).

Advantages:

  • Inexpensive. It comes up to about 30 pesos per corn dog. That’s less than the current price if you buy from most stalls/stores.
  • Quick to cook. This is a just fry product. Takes just a few minutes to enjoy this treat.
  • No prep, no mess. – Nothing to do but heat some oil and eat when done.

Disadvantages:

  • texture – the bread came out a bit dry. I prefer my corndog to have a slightly softer feel.

Overall, I still think it’s okay. it’s something you can keep on hand if you love Korean Corn dogs and have no time to make it from scratch and can’t have it delivered.

Press-on Nails Made By Bea L

Press-on Nails Made By Bea L

I was admiring my niece’s press-on nails and learned that she got them from MadeByBeaL. I was definitely interested in a way to get some nail art done without having to go through hours of sitting (and not having to do it myself).

I went to the Instagram site of MadeByBeaL and browsed through her existing designs. She did tell me I could give her a design I wanted, and she’d try to do it. The BTS fan in me was happy to choose the Love Yourself set.

With the help of my niece, we figured out my nail sizes. I messaged the sizes to MadeByBeaL together with my preferred design and nail shape.

How was it packaged?

The nails came in a simple box. The kit contained the following:

  • 10 UV gel hand-painted nails
  • 1 nail file
  • 1 nail glue
  • 1 instruction card – I can’t stress enough the importance of following the instructions.

The one suggestion

How sturdy are these nails? I managed to keep them on for two weeks without any nails popping off. I was working and doing all my chores as usual. They felt so natural it was necessary to remind myself not to grip using my nails to avoid damaging the tips.

The challenge was getting them OFF my nails. I had to soak my nails in hot water for a while to get the glue to loosen (The nail glue is strong!) The great news is the nails are ready to be reused after just a little clean-up.

If you know anyone who wants to have beautiful hands but doesn’t have time to get their nails done and wait for it to dry, point them towards MadeByBeaL.

MadeByBeaL sells press on nails she’s painted herself. Customers can choose from existing designs or request for some to be custom-made. Just message her for inquiries. She also sells tote bags and hair accessories.
