The sweltering summer days are over as the country’s weather bureau declared the start of the wet season. During this season, we need to keep our guards up because many illnesses emerge. These include diarrhea, caused by viral or bacterial infection; waterborne illnesses like typhoid fever, cholera, and leptospirosis; and vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue.
To avoid contracting these diseases, Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines Inc. (PCPPI) — the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country — reminds the public to keep hydrated, especially that we are in the middle of a global pandemic.
“It is important that we keep our immune system strong. One of the easiest ways to do this is to stay hydrated,” said PCPPI president and chief executive officer Frederick D. Ong.
To stay fit and protect yourself from diseases, here are some healthy habits you may do.
Eat healthily
What you consume today will have a huge impact on your health in the future. A good eating habit is one of the most basic practices to have a robust immune system.
Making a well-balanced meal is simple – just add more fruits and vegetables, choose whole grain food, switch to low or zero fat options, and cut back on sugar.
Exercise regularly
Exercising remains one of the most effective methods to strengthen your body during the rainy season. You do not have to buy expensive machines or pay for gym subscriptions. You only need at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. To safely exercise at home, you may check various workout videos online. If you opt to do an outdoor walk or run, follow social distancing and other safety protocols.
As part of your workout routine, replenish what you lose in sweat with sports drinks like Gatorade. It contains electrolytes that rehydrate your body to avoid dehydration.
Get enough sleep

Getting enough sleep is as important as eating healthy and exercising. A study from the Carnegie Mellon University found that people with poor, short sleep have a greater chance of getting sick.
Quality sleep helps uplift your immune system. To get quality sleep, reduce your blue light exposure at night, avoid caffeinated drinks before bedtime, and reduce daytime naps, among others.
Hydrate
Proper hydration is vital in having a strong immune system. It detoxifies and flushes out waste materials from your body. It also helps transport nutrients to our organ systems.
Taking in safe water is a must to avoid infection from water-borne diseases. To have clean drinking water, you need to boil water for at least three minutes or do water chlorination. Or you can drink purified bottled water, like Aquafina and Premiere.
If you’re moving all day and feel sluggish or tired, that’s because you lose more than just water when you sweat. You lose fluids and electrolytes. With this, it’s important for us to stay healthy and hydrated with an Electrolyte Drink like Gatorade Ion.
“Even during the rainy season, we need to hydrate to arm our body from diseases and keep our immunity in top shape. Over the years, PCPPI has been helping Filipinos achieve that with our hydration drinks,” Ong said.

This World Health Day, Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines Inc. (PCPPI) – the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country – reiterates the value of hydration this summer season.
- Drinking enough water and other essential fluids has the following health benefits:
- Regulates body temperature
- Delivers nutrients to cells
- Prevents infections
- Allows organs to function properly
- Improves our mood, cognition, and sleep quality

Medical experts encourage 15 to 20-minute daily exercises to boost our immune system, but excessive sweating may cause dehydration and mineral deficiency. More than water, sports drinks can replace the minerals lost during exercise. One of these is Gatorade, a drink that contains electrolytes to help maintain the body’s ionic balance.
According to the medical website familydoctor.org, “Sports drinks can be helpful if you plan on exercising at higher levels for more than an hour. These drinks contain carbohydrates and electrolytes that can increase your energy.”
PCPPI also produces Gatorade ION, formulated for everyday hydration with ions, low sodium, no preservatives, and no artificial flavors and colors.

Frederick D. Ong
PCPPI President & Chief Executive Officer
“Whether you are playing sports, walking under the sun, or even working from home, the body needs a little boost from hydration drinks. PCPPI has products that will help you stay hydrated, whatever your lifestyle is,” said PCPPI President and Chief Executive Officer Frederick D. Ong.
PCPPI further highlighted the importance of hydration given the threats of COVID-19 and what it can do to our bodies.
According to the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN), “hydration and nutrition play an important role in our body’s response to and recovery from COVID 19 and is an important part of your medical treatment”. ASPEN stated that drinking “supports the body’s ability to fight the virus and support the body’s immune function”.
“As a company that manufactures beverages, we need to keep our consumers hydrated, especially if they are fighting against any disease, maintaining their body’s full function,” added Ong.

In the game of basketball, a good defense is the best offense against unexpected setbacks. In life, as the world fights against the COVID-19 virus, we realize that good health is something we should never take for granted.
AXA, one of the country’s leading insurance providers and the official insurance partner of the NBA in the Philippines, shares seven simple but effective defense tactics to help you with your game plan on staying physically and mentally strong, not just during the lockdown but also after the quarantine is over.
Eat healthily.
What you eat is closely linked to your health. Avoid getting sick by maintaining a balanced diet composed of protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. By making the right food choices, you are protecting yourself from possible health conditions such as diabetes, heart attack, cancer, or stroke.
Exercise regularly.
Even off the court, you can still follow an at-home workout routine. Jump rope, do squats and lunges, push-ups, and stretches. Exercising regularly boosts your energy, maintains a healthy weight, and defends you against diseases.
Take vitamin supplements.
There are occasions when people don’t get the right amount of nutrients from food alone.
To fill the nutritional gap, drink the proper dietary supplements tailored to your body’s needs, which include omega-3, zinc, folic acid, and more.
Check out health and life insurance options.
Every now and then, people still get seriously sick despite living a healthy lifestyle. One of the best ways to prepare for this is to get health and life insurance.
Take advantage of the lockdown time to research on various health and life insurance products according to your needs. Consider AXA Health Start, which provides coverage for the top three illnesses — cancer, heart attack, and stroke — and their select early-stage conditions at an affordable price.
Avoid vices.
Smoking and excessive alcohol drinking are harmful habits that may cause your health to quickly deteriorate, which may lead to death. Smoking can lead to emphysema or pulmonary diseases while too much drinking can damage your liver. The sooner you quit, the better.
Stay hydrated.

man drinking water
Drinking more than eight glasses of water is essential to one’s health. It can help control calorie intake, energize the muscles, keep skin hydrated and young, and flush toxins out of the body.
Take a breather.
Living healthy is more than just diet and exercise; one shouldn’t forget about mental health, too. One of the best exercises to stay mentally fit is meditation or even taking deep breaths.
For beginners, sit or lie comfortably, close your eyes, and focus your attention on your breathing and how the body moves with every inhale and exhale. If your mind wanders, work on bringing your focus back to your breathing.
Now more than ever, it is important to have a game plan to stay healthy. Be physically and mentally fit by following these simple tips from AXA Philippines. For more information on AXA, visit www.axa.com.ph.

Did you know that your skin can be moisturized but not properly hydrated? Hydration and moisturization are actually two different things.
- When you hydrate your skin, you ensure that your skin cells retain more water, resulting in healthier and younger-looking skin.
- When you moisturize, you apply a protective layer on your skin that ensures that the moisture in your cells is not lost.

Dullness and tightness are telltale signs of dehydrated skin. When your skin is rough, dry or flaky—or all of the above, you need a moisturizer to retain your skin’s lipid barrier. The result is healthy skin that is soft and smooth.
If you only use a moisturizer, it may help ease your dry skin, but it does not address the cause of the problem and, chances are, you will need to reapply throughout the day. To make your skin truly healthy, you need to apply a hydrating lotion to plump up your cells.
Hydrators and moisturizers should be used in tandem for you to have healthy, hydrated, smooth and supple skin. Humectant ingredients in hydrators, like glycerin, can attract water from the surroundings by absorbing them, then binding them to the skin.

Sure, by drinking water, you keep yourself hydrated. But topical hydration registers more immediate results: younger-looking skin and well-functioning skin cells.
For your daily skin routine, first, apply a hydrating lotion like Cetaphil DailyAdvance Ultra Hydrating Lotion that is clinically proven to hydrate dry skin for 24 hours. It also contains Epidermal Replenishing Complex (ERC5), a unique combination of 5 ingredients, that helps maintain healthy skin.
Then, you can follow on with a moisturizer like Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion. They are non-greasy, non-comedogenic and fragrance free.
If you have oily skin, you still need a hydrator, though you may need to apply moisturizer less often.
Here are a few more tips:
Use fragrance free, non-comedogenic products that will hydrate and moisturize your skin, but neither irritate nor clog your pores.

natural exfoliants
Exfoliate before you hydrate and moisturize. This way, you remove the dead skin cells that may hamper your skin’s absorption. Using a loofah or bath glove when I bathe makes me feel squeaky clean!

no to hot showers
As much as possible, do not take hot showers or baths, because the heat reduces your skin’s moisture and protective oils. I am personally a big fan of hot baths so this little tidbit here is depressing news for me. 🙁 But I believe in compromises so I take warm showers instead and finish with a cold one. 😀
When the weather feels like it’s drying out your skin, have a water spritzer handy to keep your skin moist. My all-time favorite? Evian! Yey! 😀
Cetaphil DailyAdvance Ultra Hydrating Lotion and Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion are available in drugstores, department stores and supermarkets nationwide.
Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion also now comes in a new 118ml size with an SRP of Php 300.
