The sweltering summer days are over as the country’s weather bureau declared the start of the wet season. During this season, we need to keep our guards up because many illnesses emerge. These include diarrhea, caused by viral or bacterial infection; waterborne illnesses like typhoid fever, cholera, and leptospirosis; and vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue.
To avoid contracting these diseases, Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines Inc. (PCPPI) — the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country — reminds the public to keep hydrated, especially that we are in the middle of a global pandemic.
“It is important that we keep our immune system strong. One of the easiest ways to do this is to stay hydrated,” said PCPPI president and chief executive officer Frederick D. Ong.
To stay fit and protect yourself from diseases, here are some healthy habits you may do.
Eat healthily
What you consume today will have a huge impact on your health in the future. A good eating habit is one of the most basic practices to have a robust immune system.
Making a well-balanced meal is simple – just add more fruits and vegetables, choose whole grain food, switch to low or zero fat options, and cut back on sugar.
Exercise regularly
Exercising remains one of the most effective methods to strengthen your body during the rainy season. You do not have to buy expensive machines or pay for gym subscriptions. You only need at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. To safely exercise at home, you may check various workout videos online. If you opt to do an outdoor walk or run, follow social distancing and other safety protocols.
As part of your workout routine, replenish what you lose in sweat with sports drinks like Gatorade. It contains electrolytes that rehydrate your body to avoid dehydration.
Get enough sleep

Getting enough sleep is as important as eating healthy and exercising. A study from the Carnegie Mellon University found that people with poor, short sleep have a greater chance of getting sick.
Quality sleep helps uplift your immune system. To get quality sleep, reduce your blue light exposure at night, avoid caffeinated drinks before bedtime, and reduce daytime naps, among others.
Hydrate
Proper hydration is vital in having a strong immune system. It detoxifies and flushes out waste materials from your body. It also helps transport nutrients to our organ systems.
Taking in safe water is a must to avoid infection from water-borne diseases. To have clean drinking water, you need to boil water for at least three minutes or do water chlorination. Or you can drink purified bottled water, like Aquafina and Premiere.
If you’re moving all day and feel sluggish or tired, that’s because you lose more than just water when you sweat. You lose fluids and electrolytes. With this, it’s important for us to stay healthy and hydrated with an Electrolyte Drink like Gatorade Ion.
“Even during the rainy season, we need to hydrate to arm our body from diseases and keep our immunity in top shape. Over the years, PCPPI has been helping Filipinos achieve that with our hydration drinks,” Ong said.

This World Health Day, Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines Inc. (PCPPI) – the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the country – reiterates the value of hydration this summer season.
- Drinking enough water and other essential fluids has the following health benefits:
- Regulates body temperature
- Delivers nutrients to cells
- Prevents infections
- Allows organs to function properly
- Improves our mood, cognition, and sleep quality

Medical experts encourage 15 to 20-minute daily exercises to boost our immune system, but excessive sweating may cause dehydration and mineral deficiency. More than water, sports drinks can replace the minerals lost during exercise. One of these is Gatorade, a drink that contains electrolytes to help maintain the body’s ionic balance.
According to the medical website familydoctor.org, “Sports drinks can be helpful if you plan on exercising at higher levels for more than an hour. These drinks contain carbohydrates and electrolytes that can increase your energy.”
PCPPI also produces Gatorade ION, formulated for everyday hydration with ions, low sodium, no preservatives, and no artificial flavors and colors.

Frederick D. Ong
PCPPI President & Chief Executive Officer
“Whether you are playing sports, walking under the sun, or even working from home, the body needs a little boost from hydration drinks. PCPPI has products that will help you stay hydrated, whatever your lifestyle is,” said PCPPI President and Chief Executive Officer Frederick D. Ong.
PCPPI further highlighted the importance of hydration given the threats of COVID-19 and what it can do to our bodies.
According to the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN), “hydration and nutrition play an important role in our body’s response to and recovery from COVID 19 and is an important part of your medical treatment”. ASPEN stated that drinking “supports the body’s ability to fight the virus and support the body’s immune function”.
“As a company that manufactures beverages, we need to keep our consumers hydrated, especially if they are fighting against any disease, maintaining their body’s full function,” added Ong.

Pepsi Cola Product Philippines Inc. (PCPPI) — the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages and snacks in the country — strengthened its commitment to support the Department of Education’s (DepEd) 2020 Brigada Eskwela to ensure that quality basic education will continue despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
PCPPI recently organized a Brigada Eskwela donation drive to raise material resources to help students and teachers adapt to new modes of blended learning during these challenging times.

Vivian Cheong, PCPPI’s SVP for HR and Corporate Affairs
“PCPPI has always been fully supportive of DepEd’s Brigada Eskwela initiatives since 2015. And now, as the shift to remote learning was implemented across the country, schools need our help all the more to provide them with tools to facilitate online teaching and ensure continuity of education. Under any circumstance, no students shall be left behind,” said Vivian Cheong, PCPPI’s SVP for HR and Corporate Affairs.
PCPPI was able to gather materials for module production, printers, and equipment for connectivity. This is to ensure that the learning delivery modalities are effectively implemented and education remains accessible to all.
The donations were turned over to PCPPI plants’ adopted schools in different communities all over the Philippines last October, just in time for the opening of classes. Beneficiary schools include 18 Elementary and High Schools across the country which belong to communities that host PCPPI’s various manufacturing plants and offices.

Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines Inc., the exclusive manufacturer of PepsiCo beverages in the Philippines, donated thousands of hydration drinks to benefit various areas in Luzon, as part of the company’s post-disaster food relief operations for areas severely affected by typhoons Rolly and Ulysses.
PCPPI distributed almost two thousand cases of Pepsi Cola products, or around 40,000 bottles, to respond to the needs of families and communities from Bicol, Metro Manila, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and North Luzon.

Frederick Ong, President and CEO of Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc.
“The consecutive typhoons have greatly affected our countrymen in Luzon. This is while the country reels from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. To help them recover, PCPPI is sending those products to continuously hydrate and refresh them as they slowly aim to get back on their feet. And we hope to let them know that we are thinking of them and that we are here ready to help,” said PCPPI president Frederick Ong.
The company has already distributed to some municipalities in Albay, Isabela, and Cagayan, which were some of the most adversely affected provinces by the recent disasters. PCPPI has also been closely coordinating with the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Offices for an efficient distribution system of the products to the target communities.
