It was a decade ago when the Filipino Bloggers Network (FBN), one of the most active Philippine-based community of bloggers and influencers in the country, held its first-ever Thanksgiving Party in a hotel in Quezon City.
This coming December 12, FBN will hold its 10th Annual Thanksgiving Party virtually to reacquaint with fellow members around the country and reminisce 120 months of challenges and cheers, 3,650 days of networking, countless stories, and priceless memories.
Although the gathering will still be online just like last year, FBN members anticipate the annual get-together as an opportunity to make new friends and catch up with old pals they have not seen for a while, not to mention the chance of winning some exciting prizes from the games and raffle draws. Representatives of different PR groups and brands will also grace the event to personally thank members of the online community who have supported them in the past years.
FBN currently has around 2,000 members across the country and abroad and continues to expand as it provides a venue for Filipino bloggers to interact with other members, even those based overseas. Moderating the discussions and posting opportunities from several brands are co-admins Divine Reyes and Richard Mamuyac and Lariza Garcia.

Subalit sabi nga ng isang superhero, “with great power comes great responsibility.”

This holiday season, AXA Philippines, one of the leading insurance providers in the country, is giving Filipinos the opportunity to share the joy and protection of having health insurance through its new initiative, Emma Gives Back: Gift of Hope. AXA will donate 200 health insurance policies to Enfants Du Mekong scholars on behalf of those who will sign up for the Emma by AXA app from November 15 to December 15. Enfants Du Mekong is a French charity organization that helps disadvantaged children finish their studies by sponsoring education programs. It has been in the Philippines since 1997, operating facilities in the cities of Tuguegarao, Dumaguete, Cebu, and Butuan with over 3,600 sponsored Filipino scholars.
Existing AXA customers who want to support the scholars just need to download and register on the Emma by AXA app, available via the App Store, Google Play Store, or Huawei App Gallery. Along with the health plans, AXA will also donate holiday gift baskets to the scholars. Emma Gives Back: Gift of Hope is led by the company’s corporate social responsibility arm, AXA Hearts in Action, which is dedicated to making a positive impact on social inclusion, climate change, health, and disease prevention.

Rahul Hora, President, and CEO of AXA Philippines
“We launched this initiative to inspire everyone to embrace the spirit of gift-giving this holiday season, especially to the vulnerable communities. With just a few taps on their smartphone, you can give joy and the gift of health to deserving Enfants Du Mekong scholars during these challenging times,” said Rahul Hora, President and CEO of AXA Philippines.
Aside from being an avenue for social causes, the Emma by AXA app also offers free access to the AXA Rescue Line for 24/7 emergency assistance, including police, fire, ambulance, and roadside assistance. The app feature, which is available to the public, also allows the user to contact their loved ones in cases of emergencies. AXA customers can also easily purchase or monitor their insurance policies online through the app.
Previously, AXA Philippines also launched an Emma by AXA app promo in partnership with Plastic Credit Exchange (PCEx) wherein AXA donated recyclable plastic materials to PCEx for every new customer sign-up, turning over 16 tons of plastic. Aside from that, the leading insurance company also partnered with Communities Organized for Resource Allocation (CORA) for the “Adopt a Mangrove Seedling” in-app promo wherein AXA planted mangrove seedlings on the customers’ behalf to help the environment.
AXA also implemented more socially responsible initiatives, such as the office-wide launch of paperless communications in 2020 wherein tons of paper will be saved every year since all transactions with customers are now sent electronically. Notifications are also sent via the Emma by AXA app or accessed via the Emma by AXA website.

“Teaching is the profession that teaches all other professions.” Teachers are living vessels of knowledge and of dreams and aspirations of children whose voices fill teachers’ hearts and minds. As such, we recognize that lifelong learners need lifelong teachers — both championing education toward a better future for all.
With the desire to fuel hope and inspire action among Edukampyons, REX Education and the Private Education Assistance Committee (PEAC) launched the PEAC–REX Edukampyon Iskolar Para Sa Kinabukasan, a scholarship program that aims to champion, strengthen, and advance teacher education by encouraging the best and brightest learners to pursue the teaching profession.
Addressing the Challenges Faced by the Education Sector
According to the 2018 OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results, Filipino students ranked the lowest among 79 countries in mathematics, science, and reading, with over 80% of students not reaching the minimum level of proficiency in reading. In a 2019research conducted by the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS), scores of Filipino students decreased by 61 points in mathematics and by 83 points in science from 2003 to 2019. The Southeast Asia Primary Learning Metrics (SEA-PLM) also found that in 2019, at least 83% of Grade 5 students scored below reading and mathematics standards expected for the end of primary schooling.

According to the World Bank Philippines Report 2021: “Improving teacher quality in schools will mean attracting and selecting the best candidates into the teaching profession. To strengthen teacher quality, [we] should begin by selecting the right people for the profession. Policies in teacher recruitment and hiring should be aimed at increasing the attractiveness of the career, such as incentivizing high achievers to pursue teacher training and eventually enter into the profession.”
Edukampyon Iskolar Para Sa Kinabukasan
The Edukampyon Iskolar Para Sa Kinabukasan scholarship program rings true to REX Education’s Edukampyon advocacy: to rally every Filipino to champion education so that every learner is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, challenged, and values-oriented. As Edukampyons, we are duty-bound to uplift the Filipino learners today and, in the future, — and help make them whole. The time to act is now.
By encouraging the best and the brightest to pursue the teaching profession, we are investing in our learners and in the future of Philippine education. By being partners, we are working together to build and strengthen the path toward a brighter tomorrow for all of us, for our nation. By supporting the program, we are giving back to the teaching profession the highest honor and prestige it deserves.

“Teaching is a profession that has the power and influence to inspire the grooming of the greatest artists, doctors, and innovators. So, it is essential as Edukampyons to look into how we can advance and strengthen the quality of teachers and instructors… from basic education to the tertiary level. We seek for the best and the brightest to work with us, commit to the profession, and start creating a rippled effect as we enhance teachers’ quality today. This small act that we are doing in the present can have a great impact on all of our futures,” said Don Timothy Buhain, chief executive officer of REX Education during the launch of the program on October 5, 2021.
What’s Next?
REX Education and PEAC are here for you. Students can apply for the program through their respective schools; while schools can nominate their top students for the scholarship, to encourage good-standing students to pursue Teacher Education for their tertiary education.
REX Education and PEAC will also partner with teacher education centers of excellence (COEs) and centers of development (CODs) across the country to grant the scholarships, ensuring quality education and training for future teachers.
By the school year 2022–2023, 50 of the best and brightest freshmen will be selected across four basic education specializations: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Those admitted to the program will not only enjoy living and technology-support allowances; they will also receive the best training from partner COEs and CODs across the country and bear the pride and responsibility to give back and advance the community.
Edukampyon Iskolar Para Sa Kinabukasan was launched through a virtual event that gathered educators and representatives from PEAC, REX Education, Philippine Business of Education, ASEAN Teacher Education Network, the Department of Education, and the Commission on Higher Education. Apart from launching the initiative, it was also a celebration of teachers across the country in time for World Teachers’ Month.
Those who missed the event can still watch it via the REX Education Facebook page.

The barangay is the basic level of governance or political unit that exists only in the Philippines. It serves as the primary planning and implementing unit of government policies, plans, programs, projects, and activities in the community. Recognizing their role as duty-bearers, Rex Education and the Center for Local Governance and Professional Development, Inc. (CLGPD) created the Edukampyon Local Governance Webinar Series.
With the call, “Alamin. Matuto. Makilahok,” the webinar series focused on helping barangay officials and local government units (LGUs) in deepening their understanding of their roles as public servants.
“What we aim for everyone to see is how policies and guidance from the top levels of our government are implemented on the ground with help and assistance from our local governments. What we want to leave behind with everyone is hope, borne of the realization that there are champions of education much closer to your homes, and that you too, can become champions of education,” said REX Education Chief Executive Officer Don Timothy Buhain during his opening message for one of the webinar episodes.
The webinar series is anchored on REX Education’s Edukampyon agenda: to champion education and help create an environment where every lifelong learner is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, challenged, and values-oriented. It also values the essential role of duty-bearers from various communities as Edukampyon themselves and contributors to nation-building.
This is where the critical role of the government comes in, as barangays and LGUs share in this task of championing education. As a partner in lifelong learning, REX Education provides platforms like the Edukampyon Local Governance Webinar Series to further push and ignite the passion for service of the nation’s servant-leaders, from the top to the grassroots, so they can serve their communities better.
A 9-Episode Series Seals Rex Education’s Support
This 9-episode series is a campaign to highlight the duties of LGU officials as champions of education. It also serves as an introduction and supporting material to Rex Education’s recent release, the Barangay Handbook on Leadership and Management, which is a set of handbooks covering laws, implementing rules and regulations (IRRs), program activities, and legal opinions for barangay officials to use as references.
The first two episodes tackle policies, programs, and systems of early childhood care and development in the Philippines.
Episodes 3 to 9 cover Barangay Governance; Barangay Social Services; Barangay Fiscal Management; Barangay Justice, Security, and Disaster Preparedness; and Barangay Accountability.
Each episode features keynote speakers who shared their expert insights on each topic, including:
- Hon. Epimaco Densing III, undersecretary for operations of the Department of Interior and Local Governance (DILG), who shared his expertise on Barangay Governance and the roles and responsibilities of the barangay officials under the Local Government Code of 1991;
- Kathrine Joyce Dellosa, medical officer for the Department of Health’s (DOH) Bureau of Local Health Systems and Development, who talked about the barangay framework when it comes to health response;
- Hon. Tonisito M.C. Umali, undersecretary for the Department of Education’s (DepEd) Legislative Affairs, External Partnerships, and Project Management Service, who covered learning continuity initiatives;
- Brenda Miranda and Mary Ann Rada of the Bureau of Local Government Finance (BLGF) on fiscal matters and budget management;
- Cheryl Navarro, disaster risk reduction focal person of the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s (DILG) National Barangay Operations Office;
- Elenida Del Rosario-Basug, director of the climate change service of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR); and
- Atty. Enrique Dela Cruz, Jr., municipal councilor of Baliuag, Bulacan, and lecturer at the University of the Philippines National College of Public Administration and Governance.
Each episode also includes experiences and best practices shared by different barangay exemplars, to encourage and inspire other barangays and LGUs.
Tayo ang pagbabago (We hope can deepen everyone’s understanding about the importance of the barangays and local governance on the success of implementing government policies. If we want change, it’s important that everyone does their part to help the government. We are the change),” said Hon. Epimaco Densing III.

I recently had the opportunity to try some buffalo wings and BBQ ribs from
Sauced.MNL. It was really delicious. The meat was well-cooked, falling off the bone. The wings were good, nicely crispy, and just the right size for a bite or two. It smelled good, and we had a battle on our hands to keep our four feet away
(all our dogs were begging for a taste, too!)
They mean it when they say the star is the sauce. It is so good! This is coming from someone who isn’t fond of sauces (I often prefer plain and simple food). That said, I would willingly BUY A BOTTLE of the sauces we tried today.
We were able to confirm that the sauces are made by the owner of Sauced.MNL himself. Sadly, they aren’t selling the sauce alone. More incentive to order the food (which is also delicious). The best proof is in the tasting, so don’t hesitate and order if you are in the covered area.
