Encephalitis: A Life-Threatening Brain Condition

Encephalitis: A Life-Threatening Brain Condition

A new survey commissioned by Encephalitis International, the peak global body for encephalitis, reveals that Filipino emergency medical professionals often overlook encephalitis, a life-threatening neurological condition characterized by brain inflammation, despite the presence of common symptoms.

Survey results showed that over half (54%) of local respondents did not consider infectious encephalitis and three-quarters (74%) did not consider autoimmune encephalitis as a diagnosis when presented with a list of accepted symptoms for each condition. The survey findings are released in line with World Encephalitis Day on February 22, 2024.

Moreover, despite encephalitis leading to death in up to 40% of cases, 66% of the respondents did not consider death as a potential patient outcome resulting from delayed recognition and treatment.

“In the wake of these alarming survey findings, it is clear that much more must be done to bridge the gap in encephalitis awareness and expertise. Encephalitis International is determined to increase this awareness among medical professionals through the development of globally accessible training programs that will provide the tools for them to better recognize and treat encephalitis. Of course, we cannot do this alone and will continue to work alongside international entities, such as the World Health Organization, to elevate encephalitis as a global health priority,” shared Dr. Ava Eason, Chief Executive of Encephalitis International.

The condition can happen to individuals of any age, sex, and ethnicity, with symptoms varying depending on the type. Symptoms of infectious encephalitis encompass altered consciousness, behavioral changes, fever, and headaches, while autoimmune encephalitis presents with memory issues, psychiatric symptoms, altered consciousness, and personality changes.

With the risk of death or permanent brain impairment when the disease strikes, first responders are essential in promptly considering encephalitis during health emergencies to mitigate the worst-case patient outcomes.

Misdiagnosis In Patients Leads to Worse Patient Outcomes

The survey results reveal the reality for encephalitis patients in the country. Roschelle Del Rosario, a caregiver based in Bulacan and mother to a 23-year-old patient named Alex, shared their struggle with his rapid symptom progression despite medical intervention. Initially experiencing insomnia, hallucinations, agitation, personality changes, appetite loss, and seizures, Alex was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder. However, a second opinion in May 2023 revealed autoimmune encephalitis.

But the diagnosis was just the beginning. Alex’s health rapidly declined, leading to a four-and-a-half-month coma following the misdiagnosis. Roschelle highlighted the extensive research required into treatment options, which, due to limited local resources, is largely dependent on international organizations like Encephalitis International, which is committed to funding research that aims to advance recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of the condition as well as rehabilitation and quality of life of all people affected and their families.

“Alex had his whole life ahead of him as a graduating college student and at the top of his class when his symptoms appeared. Today, he’s a fighter battling encephalitis. He’s overcome his comatose state and is even able to use his mobile phone again after losing his cognitive and motor skills due to the disease. Eight months into this journey, he still faces significant challenges like hallucinations and memory loss. Sometimes, you’ll talk to him, and the next second, he’ll ask who you are. It’s a tough road, but we still consider ourselves fortunate because, even though treating encephalitis in the country is difficult, we’ve found dedicated professionals who are willing to help and learn more about this disease so Alex can regain his health and have a chance at a normal life again,” shared Del Rosario.

Supporting Emergency Medical Professionals with Training for Diagnosis

Further survey results found that only (35%) a third of local emergency medical professionals surveyed strongly agreed that their training had given them the confidence to recognize encephalitis. More than three-quarters (79%) somewhat or strongly agreed that they would benefit from more training.

Dr. Ferron Ocampo

Dr. Ferron Ocampo

Dr. Ferron Ocampo, an Adult Neurology Fellow of the Philippine Neurological Association and an advocate for encephalitis awareness, recognizes the challenges regarding the lack of training in encephalitis recognition and management in the country due to its rarity. Priority in resource allocation, including education and training, is given to more common conditions such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

However, Dr. Ocampo stresses the importance of advocating for encephalitis awareness because this condition needs immediate attention, as delayed diagnosis can lead to worsening of the patient’s condition and serious consequences if not treated promptly.

“Encephalitis is a neurological emergency that can have devastating consequences if not diagnosed and treated promptly. However, not all medical professionals are aware of the symptoms and are confident in managing them. As we celebrate World Encephalitis Day, various international and local stakeholders should collaborate to prioritize providing training and resources to medical professionals worldwide in order to enhance encephalitis detection, diagnosis, and treatment,” Dr. Ocampo shared.

In line with this urgent need for education, Encephalitis International is launching its largest fundraiser yet, “Don’t Delay. Give Today.” This initiative aims to promote early recognition and treatment to prevent death and disability from encephalitis by developing accessible, accredited training modules to provide more robust information and training on encephalitis. Emergency medical professionals in the Philippines and globally can access training opportunities by signing up for free professional membership.

From Stress to Serenity: How Hydrogen Molecules Nourishes Your Lifestyle

From Stress to Serenity: How Hydrogen Molecules Nourishes Your Lifestyle

In today’s fast-paced world, stress is a constant presence for many people. However, we all seek inner peace and calm, a sense of serenity amidst the chaos. This is where hydrogen molecules come into play. They are an emerging wellness trend that can nourish the body and help you achieve tranquility from within. Let’s explore the benefits of hydrogen molecules and how they can assist you in reducing stress and embracing a more serene lifestyle.

The Antioxidant Superpower

Hydrogen molecules support your well-being by combating oxidative stress. Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance in the body between harmful molecules known as “free radicals” and helpful ones called “antioxidants.” This imbalance often arises from factors such as pollution, a poor diet, and stress.

Oxidative stress can lead to issues like accelerated aging, inflammation, and chronic diseases. Hydrogen molecules serve as special antioxidants that specifically target and neutralize the most harmful free radical, the hydroxyl radical (OH-). By restoring balance within your cells, hydrogen helps them stay healthy and function properly. One way to benefit from hydrogen is by consuming hydrogen water.

Soothing the Stress Response

Hydrogen water is a powerful ally in the fight against stress. Prolonged stress can lead to various health issues, including anxiety and a weakened immune system. However, hydrogen water has the potential to combat oxidative stress and reduce inflammation in the body, which can be a game-changer.

Some studies even suggest that it enhances the body’s ability to cope with stress and build resilience in the face of adversity. This makes hydrogen water a valuable tool for those looking to manage their stress effectively, empowering them to take control of their health.

Elevating the Hydration Game

Hydration is essential for overall health, and hydrogen water presents a distinct advantage in this regard. It not only offers important hydration but also contains molecular hydrogen, which increases the water’s bioavailability. This means that hydrogen water is more easily absorbed by your cells, optimizing cellular hydration and improving nutrient delivery.

A Natural Boost for Your Skin

Radiant and youthful skin often eludes those who lead stressful lives. Hydrogen water can offer a natural boost for your skin health. By neutralizing free radicals in the skin, hydrogen water helps protect collagen and elastic fibers, promoting skin elasticity and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Additionally, hydrogen water’s hydrating properties can contribute to a healthy complexion, leaving your skin looking and feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Incorporating Hydrogen Water into Your Lifestyle

Integrating hydrogen water into your daily routine is a simple and enjoyable way to prioritize your well-being. Many people choose to consume hydrogen water in the morning as part of their hydration ritual, helping to kick start their day with a boost of antioxidants.

Crohn’s Disease, makes your gut “unhappy”

It’s hard to live in this day and age without frequently being reminded of the importance of hydration. But as important as this message may be for the general population, it’s absolutely critical when you have Crohn’s disease.

The good news is that it’s usually possible to avoid dehydration, as long as you’re aware of what can cause it and pay attention to getting enough of the right fluids. This means that people with Crohn’s may need to work harder to stay hydrated than most other people — especially if disease-related factors put you at high risk for dehydration.

Here’s how Crohn’s disease can lead to dehydration, and what you can do to make sure you’re keeping this risk as low as possible.

Understanding the Link Between Crohn’s Disease and Dehydration

Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that affects the digestive tract, causing inflammation and damage. Though it commonly affects the end of the small intestine and the beginning of the large intestine, inflammation can occur anywhere in the digestive tract.

Image

Dehydration is a significant concern for individuals with Crohn’s disease due to various factors. Gastrointestinal losses from diarrhea, avoidance of food and drink due to abdominal symptoms, and increased fluid loss in the stool for those with portions of their gastrointestinal tract removed can all lead to dehydration. Additionally, external factors like excessive sweating, high urine output, alcohol intake, and diarrhea from infections can further contribute to dehydration. Therefore, staying hydrated is essential for managing the disease and overall health.

Image

Recognizing and Managing Dehydration in Crohn’s Disease

Early signs of dehydration in people with Crohn’s disease include constant thirst, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and dark urine. Though there’s limited direct data on dehydration’s impact on Crohn’s symptoms, it’s believed that dehydration can amplify gastrointestinal and other discomforts. More severe dehydration can manifest as dizziness, muscle cramps, pale and dry skin, sunken eyes, confusion, rapid breathing, and rapid pulse.

In extreme cases, dehydration can lead to life-threatening complications, such as kidney failure. Timely medical attention is crucial for severe cases.

Long-term, proper hydration is essential for the well-being of all organ systems, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and managing dehydration in individuals with Crohn’s disease.

How hydrogen water help in hydration or improve gut’s health?

As mention above, proper hydration is crucial for maintaining good health. Water plays a vital role in nearly every bodily function, from regulating body temperature to aiding in nutrient absorption and waste elimination. However, not all water is created equal. Hydrogen water takes hydration to the next level with its unique properties, but why?

Understanding Hydrogen Water

Image

Molecular hydrogen, composed of two hydrogen atoms, is the smallest and lightest molecule, which gives it distinct advantages. Due to its size, hydrogen can easily penetrate cell membranes and enter the mitochondria, the cellular powerhouse where energy is produced. This ability to access cellular structures sets it apart from conventional water.

Hydrogen Water as an Antioxidant

Image

One of the most intriguing aspects of hydrogen is its antioxidant properties. Unlike traditional antioxidants that indiscriminately neutralize free radicals, molecular hydrogen selectively targets only the most harmful radicals. By reducing oxidative stress, hydrogen helps to protect cells and maintain their integrity. This effect may contribute to better hydration, as well-nourished cells are more efficient at absorbing and utilizing water.

Other Potential Health Benefits of Hydrogen Water

Studies suggest that molecular hydrogen may have anti-inflammatory effects, support cardiovascular health, and even aid in recovery after exercise. Additionally, hydrogen water’s ability to mitigate oxidative stress might be particularly beneficial for athletes and individuals with physically demanding lifestyles.

It’s essential to note that hydrogen water does not replace regular water. Instead, it complements a balanced hydration strategy. Regular water remains essential for overall fluid intake, while hydrogen-rich water offers an additional edge with its potential health-enhancing properties. Consider incorporating both into your daily routine to optimize hydration and reap potential benefits.
