Joey Paras as Didi in Zsazsa Zaturnnah 2

Joey ParasI was able to watch the technical rehearsal last night of Zsazsa Zaturnnah at the PETA Theater.  This was the first time ever for me to see Joey Paras perform.  He had some big shoes to fill.

Physically – Tommy Lee in drag
Acting – his version of Didi is nasal and malambing.  He is always touching/embracing Ada, Zsazsa, and Dodong.  I guess his interpretation of the role is … Didi is touchy-feely.
Singing – he can sing, he definitely can sing.  But, personally, I think that Ricci has better pipes … or maybe this is because the songs were arranged/set at Ricci’s vocal range, which is higher than Joey’s.  Joey did a credible job, though.  I loved it when he would put runs in the songs, particularly in his back up parts.

Joey’s Didi is almost religious to the graphic novel.  I especially loved the battle pose he assumed during the mumu fight scene.

In last night’s performance he slipped and fell and injured himself (hit his back at a corner of the steps on the stage) after the scene where he gets shot by Queen Femina.  So the pain he was supposed to be expressing as he sang was actually real.  According to Arnold Reyes, his side was swollen.  Hope he can perform well tonight.

This I promise you all … you won’t be disappointed in his performance.  He is really good.  And he puts a different and yet interesting spin to the character.  We will always remember Ricci (i_naku) as Didi (he owned the role!) and he will always have a special place in our heart.  But we must find room in there for Joey, too.  He is definitely worth it!

You beat me to this: In last night’s performance he slipped and fell and injured himself (hit his back at a corner of the steps on the stage) after the scene where he gets shot by Queen Femina. So the pain he was supposed to be expressing as he sang was actually real. According to Arnold Reyes, his side was swollen. Hope he can perform well tonight.

I was quite bothered by that fall and by the slippery elevated “catwalk” especially when the actors kept slipping.

We will always remember Ricci as Didi (he owned the role!) and he will always have a special place in our heart. But we must find room in there for Joey, too. He is definitely worth it!
We must also find room in there for Vince de Jesus (Vinth de Jethuth!) as the Didi with a lisp…Didi with a lithp! 🙂
